Photography: Silver Reef Ghost Town

Silver Reef is a ghost town in Leeds, Utah, about ten miles north of St. George. It was a boomtown in the late 1800s due to the discovery of silver, which was found in area's red sandstone. It is the only place in the United States where silver was found in sandstone. The fascinating history can be read on the town's website.

My husband and daughters stopped here on our way home from California. The area is gorgeous and the remnants of what was once a thriving town are haunting.
